Spiral-point taps are ideal for machines with good bottom support to tap through holes or blind holes with sufficient bottom clearance. There is another term for them, the Gun Tap, because they shoot the chips out before they are tapped. By doing so, the flutes are also less likely to get clogged or jammed up with chips. As with straight flute taps, spiral point taps are generally made of the same material and have the same physical dimensions. Conversely, spiral point taps have the cutting faces of the first few threads cut at an angle depending on the axial inclination of the tap, forcing chip evacuation before cutting action. This feature of spiral point taps, in conjunction with the excellent shearing action of the flute, further demonstrates their suitability for production tapping through holes.
It is commonly the case with this type of tap that the flute passage is shallower than it is for conventional taps. With the more cross-sectional area in the spiral point tap, the drill has greater strength and accuracy, can tap at greater speeds, and requires less power to drive. Many different spiral point taps can be used to cut internal threads in a wide range of materials. As the swarf is pushed away from the cutting edges during tapping, it is made through the hole by the angle of the spiral on the front of the tap. In addition, their geometry helps prevent shavings from packing the hole and prolong the lifetime of the tap. In addition to the taps that have a spiral point, they also come in different thread form sizes and metric standard sizes.
